Road Warriors

Next week, M's friend from college JPB is coming to visit! We are thrilled to host him on a tour of East Africa. We'll update more on the itinerary later but we thought we'd show you what he's in for on our bus rides.

Here is a video taken from our bus ride home from Kilimanjaro. This is in southern Kenya near a town called Voi.

A few things to really appreciate:

1. Kenyans drive on the left side of the road. Notice, however, the
driver 'skillfully' using the entire road to find the route that he
likes best. In fact, he even uses both shoulders when he finds them
to be less potholed than the actual roads.
2. Notice the oncoming car doing the same and almost hitting us.
3. That hissing sound that keeps going on and off is the brakes
4. We almost hit a donkey.

  1. Oh, wow! Reminds me of Asia - we had one driver who turned off his headlights (at night!) with some vague theory about saving the battery.

    love you!

  2. They do that here too! No matter how hard you try, you cannot convince some drivers that your lights don't use up gas (or petrol as they say here).

Driving with your lights on at dusk means you get flashed a hundred times to stop "wasting gas". Meanwhile M is flashing them to "turn on your lights!!". It's very amusing.

  3. Kenyan Flashers - good one! Love the sound of the brakes and I suppose you have to be glad that you know they're operational? What an adventure!
